Balasen Open Die Forging

Open-die forging, also known as free forging, is a metalworking process where heated metal is shaped by repeated hammering or pressing between flat or simple contoured dies. Unlike closed-die forging, it does not confine the metal within a mold, allowing for flexible deformation. The process involves localized compression, elongation, or bending to achieve the desired form. It is typically used for large, simple-shaped components or pre-forms for further machining.

Advantages of open closed die forging

1. High Strength and Superior Mechanical Properties:

Refines the metal's grain structure through forging, enhancing fatigue resistance, toughness, and load-bearing capacity.

2. Production Flexibility:

No complex molds required, making it suitable for small batches, customized parts, or large-scale workpieces.

3. Cost-Effectiveness:

Saves on mold costs, especially for single-piece or low-volume production.

4. High Material Utilization:

Reduces the need for subsequent machining and minimizes overall material waste.

5. Broad Size Adaptability:

Capable of producing ultra-large components weighing hundreds of tons (e.g., marine crankshafts).

Balasen Furan Resin Sand Casting

Balasen provides custom furan resin sand casting for industrial components based on customer drawings and material requirements. We evaluate the casting route according to part geometry, casting weight, machining allowances and inspection needs. Send your drawing, material grade, estimated weight, required quantity and critical dimensions for a feasibility review and quotation.

What Is furan sand Casting?

01   /   HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

furan sand casting forms a mold by bonding sand with a furan-based resin system. Cores can create internal passages; after pouring and shakeout, the casting is cleaned and the specified surfaces can be machined.

For Balasen’s custom epoxy sand casting, the part drawing decides whether this route fits. Material grade, wall sections, internal features, casting weight and required finished condition must be reviewed together.

Start with the part: mark the bores, sealing faces and datums that need machining. The remaining surfaces can then be reviewed as cast.

02   /   PROCESS FIT

When Is resin bonded sand casting a Good Fit?

The value of a stronger resin-bonded mold is most relevant when the drawing needs a considered core, mold and finishing plan. These are the questions to answer before choosing it for a specific order.

01 / CORES

Internal passages

A body with an internal opening needs a practical core layout, support and cleaning route.

02 / SECTIONS

Part size and walls

Weight, section changes, mold access and feeding matter more than a maximum weight figure alone.

03 / FINISH

Functional surfaces

Bores, flanges and mating faces need a defined machining allowance and final inspection basis.

Comparing this route with green sand? Read Balasen’s sand casting comparison. This page focuses on the parts Balasen can evaluate and quote.

03   /   ENGINEERING REVIEW

Can Your Drawing Be Made with This Process?

Balasen’s page lists gray iron, ductile iron, cast steel and copper castings. A drawing review checks the exact alloy and part shape before a published process range is applied to your project.

MATERIAL ROUTE

Iron, steel or copper?

Provide the grade and standard. Melting, solidification, any required heat treatment and inspection vary by material; one generic capability figure cannot describe them all.

PART GEOMETRY

Where do cores and thick sections sit?

Mark internal cavities, changes in wall thickness and difficult-to-access features. These affect the mold, feeding and cleaning plan.

Decision point: the applicable casting weight, tolerance and lead time are confirmed against the drawing, alloy and order requirements.

04   /   PRODUCTION AND VERIFICATION

What Controls Surface Finish and Critical Dimensions?

The mold is only one part of the result. A casting’s surface, as-cast dimensions and finished interfaces depend on decisions made before pouring and after shakeout.

01

Pattern and core

Plan parting lines, internal passages and machining allowances from the approved drawing.

02

Mold and pouring

Assess sand condition, feeding and pouring for the chosen alloy and section thickness.

03

Machined surfaces

Define the final condition of bores, sealing faces and assembly datums separately.

04

Agreed inspection

Set measurement points, test methods and acceptance values from the purchase specification.

Balasen Low Temperature Wax Casting

lost wax investment casting starts with a wax pattern whose geometry is reproduced by a ceramic shell. For an industrial part, the important questions are in the details: can thin ribs hold their shape during pattern handling, what casting allowance do flange faces need, and which bores or sealing faces must be machined afterward? Balasen reviews these features against the drawing, specified alloy and inspection requirements before recommending this lost wax precision casting route. The wax is removed before molten metal is poured into the shell. Here, “low-temperature” refers to the wax-pattern process, not the operating temperature of the finished component.

Advantages of lost wax casting services

01

START WITH THE DRAWING

Is lost wax casting materials Suitable for Your Part?

The wax pattern carries the part's geometry into the ceramic shell. A useful process review starts with features that must remain stable as the pattern is made, handled and assembled—not a fixed tolerance promised for every casting.

Thin or projecting features

Ribs, narrow arms and delicate edges need a pattern-handling and shell-building review before the route is chosen.

Sections and metal flow

Wall changes, enclosed spaces and the proposed alloy affect the gating, filling and solidification plan.

Finished condition

Critical dimensions, mating faces and inspection points should be marked before any as-cast or machined finish is quoted.

FROM WAX TO METAL / 02

Where Can Dimensions Change Between Wax and Metal?

Investment casting transfers the geometry through several stages. Reviewing each stage against the drawing helps define which dimensions can be accepted as cast and which need finishing or measurement.

01   WAX PATTERN

Pattern formation, cooling and handling can affect slender features and reference surfaces.

02   SHELL

Pattern assembly, ceramic coating and drying must support the intended geometry.

03   POURING

After dewaxing, filling and alloy solidification influence the final casting dimensions.

04   FINISHING

Gate removal, specified machining and final inspection establish the delivered condition.

Specify drawing datums, as-cast dimensions and machined dimensions separately. Tolerances and surface finish should be agreed for the actual alloy and part geometry.

FINISHED-PART REVIEW / 03

Which Features Can Stay As Cast, and Which Need Machining?

A casting drawing should separate the shape produced by the mold from the surfaces that do functional work. This is especially useful for flanged and flow-control parts, where an attractive casting surface does not by itself establish the fit of a bore or the condition of a sealing face.

Review for an as-cast finish

External contours and non-mating features may remain as cast when the drawing's surface and dimensional requirements permit.

Identify machining stock

Bores, threads, flange faces and sealing surfaces may require machining allowances and clear finished dimensions.

Agree on inspection

Mark the dimensions to measure and specify any material, pressure or leak test required by the finished-part specification.

Geometry reference: bores and sealing interfaces need their own finishing requirements.

The component photo illustrates features to review; its production route is confirmed separately for each drawing.

CHOOSING THE WAX ROUTE / 04

Low-Temperature or Medium-Temperature Wax: How Is the Route Chosen?

Balasen offers both low- and medium-temperature wax investment casting routes. The useful comparison begins with the actual wax system available for the part and the drawing requirements. A temperature label alone does not establish the casting's tolerance, alloy suitability or finished surface.

Pattern requirements

Feature size, pattern strength, handling and repeatability.

Shell and metal

Assembly, dewaxing, section changes and the specified alloy.

Delivered condition

As-cast geometry, machining, quantity and inspection scope.

For the other wax route, see medium-temperature wax casting. For the broader process family, see investment casting.

BUYER QUESTIONS / 06

Low-Temperature Wax Casting FAQ

Does “low-temperature” mean the casting is suitable for low-temperature service?

It describes the wax-pattern route. The finished metal part's service-temperature suitability depends on its specified alloy, heat treatment and required tests.

Can every feature meet the same as-cast tolerance?

No single tolerance describes every feature or material. The drawing should identify critical dimensions and indicate which faces, holes or threads need a machined finish.

What determines whether low- or medium-temperature wax is used?

The actual wax systems, pattern geometry, selected alloy, order quantity and finished-part specification should be reviewed together. A route is selected for the part rather than from a general accuracy claim.
